It is with great pleasure that the Islamic Council of Victoria announce the next session of City Circle (http://citycircle.weebly.com/ ). Who: Dr Peta Stephenson. Dr Peta Stephenson, an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Asia Institute at the University of Melbourne, specialises in the study of cross-cultural encounters between Indigenous and non-white migrant communities in Australia. Peta is the author of The Outsiders Within: Telling Australia’s Indigenous-Asian Story (UNSW Press: 2007). Her current book-in-progress, called Islam Dreaming, traces the long history of Islam in Indigenous Australia as a way of understanding its growing popularity among contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Topic: "Islam in Indigenous Australia: A History of Community Survival and Self-Renewal". An increasing number of Indigenous Australians are identifying with Islam. This presentation will highlight this recent phenomenon and its historical antecedence. It will cover the existence of a religious and cultural phenomenon that goes back to pre-colonial times and, not only persists today, but enjoys a renewed vitality.
