Stories from the Royal Children’s Hospital: Ishak
Over the next few weeks, the #ICVHospitalChaplaincy will be sharing community stories from the Royal Children Hospital. This week we are sharing a story in memory of a boy named Ishak. Ishak had a rare and permanent disability. Ishak’s story is one of many from our community members who have undergone treatment and receive support through the RCH. We are proud to support the Good Friday Appeal to help other children and their family with the life changing services provided by RCH. To read Ishak’s story from his mother’s recount, read further. My son, Ishak, was born premature at 25 weeks. Ishak developed many complications after birth. At the age of 2, Ishak was diagnosed with schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia, a rare and permanent disability. Schimke is a condition characterized by short stature, kidney disease, and a weakened immune system. Life expectancy is limited to childhood or early adolescence. The day Ishak was diagnosed with schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia was the most devastating week of my life. My experience with Ishak from this moment was an extraordinary roller coaster of emotions that I faced on daily basis. It was a venture no one expects to take and one in which there is no adequate preparation. It was, however, worth both, the joyful and painful efforts of journeying through.Ishak’s journey consisted of continuous hospital visits, check-ups, blood tests, x-rays, blood transfusion, and so on and so forth. Just before Ishak’s 5th Birthday, he was admitted to hospital. A few days later, he died from complications of kidney failure, congestive heart failure, and unspecified lung disease.
Ishak’s health and happiness was my prime concern, and i worked hard towards gaining some degree of independent living for him. I was glad to see any progress that he made. Ishak has taught me much. His legacy is that, through his example, i now understand more about love, joy, patience, perseverance, courage and acceptance. I am proud to have been his parent, and i will carry him in my heart for ever.
