Campaign to shine a light on devastating impacts of ‘War on Terror’
ICV Deplores Irresponsible HeadlineThe Murdoch media’s The Daily Telegraph August 9 publication featured the front page headline “ALLAH AK BARRED” to report on the five Australians who were stripped of their citizenship. This is an outrageous headline even by the Daily Telegraph’s abysmally low standards. The headline is deeply offensive for Muslim Australians but should be equally objectionable to all Australians that believe in common decency and minimum standards from the media. Freedom of speech comes with responsibility, and the Murdoch media has all too often peddled hateful content and worse. ICV president Mohamed Mohideen said, “Such inflammatory and irresponsible journalism is totally unacceptable and the Islamic Council of Victoria seeks an apology and removal of the headline, calls for the media to uphold its own code of conduct, and hopes that the Press Council will investigate the matter further.” The headline comes during a week where we have seen other examples of racism-fuelled media stories by the Murdoch owned press including Sky News’ interview with supremacist and Hitler admirer Blair Cottrell, and Andrew Bolt’s “The Foreign Invasion” article published in the Herald Sun.
In his final speech, Australia’s race commissioner Dr Tim Soutphomasane condemned race-baiting commentators and politicians, warning that “race politics is back.” The ICV shares his concerns about this rampant “politicization of racial fear”. The ICV is alarmed at the relentless rise in Islamophobia often driven by irresponsible media reporting and fear-mongering politicians. At its essence, Islamophobia, like all forms of intense prejudice, de-humanises and de-legitimises people. This should be of concern to all Australians.
