“The Islamic Council of Victoria is committed to spreading the word on organ and tissue donation every other day of the week too. Last week ICV Hospital Chaplains, volunteers, board members and staff had a chat about Project Hayat in-line with DonateLife Week – aiming to raise more awareness about how to save up to 10 lives by making the move to register.”
The ICV Project Hayat team is back on the road to continue its annual awareness campaign surrounding the importance of organ and tissue donation. This year Project Hayat will be within the African community encouraging more people to join the Australian Organ Donor Register online and to discuss their donation decision with family and friends.
Project Hayat, sponsored by the Organ and Tissue Authority’s DonateLife campaign, aims to educate Muslim communities in Victoria about how people from all walks of life depend on organ and tissue donations regardless of age, ethnicity, religion or language.
The team has reached hundreds of Victorian Muslims thus far, delivering information sessions in various languages; English, Arabic, Turkish, Urdu and Punjabi to Victorian communities from the Middle East, Turkey, Pakistan and India. This year Project Hayat will reach communities from the Horn of Africa, delivering information sessions in Somali, Arabic and English across Victoria.
The Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt said, “In the first five months of this year, 211 deceased organ donors and their families have generously saved and transformed the lives of 582 people.”
ICV president Mohamed Mohideen said ICV had worked hard to get the facts out about organ and tissue donation and its permissibility in Islam – now it was the Muslim communities turn to consolidate their knowledge and register.
“At any one time, around 1,400 Australians are waiting for a life-saving transplant and it could be any one of us.”
