Trump should be condemned but the real story is that the inhumane Israeli occupation continues
The announcement by President Trump that the US will formally recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel should come as no surprise. This was a Trump campaign pledge after all and it plays to his domestic political constituency which is obviously all that he cares about.
More to the point, this announcement makes official what has been US policy for decades. It is time to ditch the pretence that the US is interested in a just peace.
The Palestinian people will never relinquish their claim to occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
And nor should they.
So the question is not what will be the impact of this announcement on the ‘peace process’. The real question is what is the international community doing to bring about an end to the occupation of Palestinian land, an end to the daily suffering and humiliation of the Palestinian people, and an end to Israel’s apartheid policies?
The Palestinian people don’t need more UN resolutions, condemnations by world leaders, and stark warnings from humanitarian agencies. They need decisive action now to change their grim reality and to provide hope that their legitimate aspirations will be achieved.
The ICV again calls upon the Australian government to join over 130 nations and the overwhelming majority of people around the world to immediately recognise the state of Palestine.
Further, the ICV calls upon the Australia government to distance itself from America’s failed policies on Israel and Palestine, and to join the efforts by the UN, the EU, and others to broker a just peace based on a two state solution.
