Why this campaign, right now

The end of 2024 marked the end of the Victorian Government's financial support to faith communities via Spiritual Care Australia (SCA). This decision left many faith-based chaplaincy services in Victoria in limbo — including the ICV's Hospital Chaplaincy program, which handles the critical work of supporting Muslim patients during health crises and end-of-life journeys.

Despite this setback, the ICV's Hospital Chaplaincy program has continued to provide comprehensive spiritual care for those in our community going through temporary health crises or end-of-life journeys. Our support extends to their families and loved ones, and includes referrals to different services — be it financial, social or psychological.

2024–2025 impact: Approximately 1,200 patients were visited across all major CBD and suburban hospitals, and 20 new chaplaincy volunteers were trained — all achieved while under-funded and stretched thin.

Your support directly funds chaplaincy hours, volunteer training and capacity building, and ensures we can continue meeting this essential need. With your donation, we can expand from crisis mode to genuine, sustainable care.

About this campaign

Throughout the year, the ICV Hospital Chaplaincy program was the first stop for many in our community seeking support — through hospital spiritual care managers, social workers, nurses, doctors and even from psychiatric units.

Information and support on topics such as death and dying in Islam proved to be highly sought after, with referrals provided to appropriate resources and professional services, particularly for grieving parents of babies, children, and stillbirths.

Who are we helping?

Grieving families facing the loss of babies, children, and stillbirths — needing guidance grounded in Islamic principles, support in understanding Islamic perspectives on death and dying, and connection to professional services and community support.

Families in health crises navigating end-of-life decisions, treatment withdrawal, and palliative care — needing support that honours both medical expertise and Islamic faith.

Hospital healthcare providers seeking to better understand Islamic practices and provide culturally sensitive, respectful care to Muslim patients and families.

How your donation is used

Funds raised directly support:

Volunteer chaplaincy coverage — supporting trained and supervised volunteer chaplains visiting patients across major CBD and suburban hospitals.

Chaplain training & capacity building — Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training for volunteers at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and beyond, and education programs for hospital staff on Islamic practices and culturally sensitive care.

Volunteer recruitment & recognition — identifying and training new volunteers (20 trained in 2024–2025), and supporting their wellbeing through recognition afternoons, conference attendance, and ongoing community connection.

Specialist programs — aged care volunteer training (launched October 2024), nursing home visits, and participation in broader health initiatives.
