The ICV welcomes the decision by the Albanese Labor government on Jerusalem

It has been Australia's bi-partisan policy for decades that Tel Aviv and not Jerusalem is the internationally recognised capital of Israel. The Morrison government chose to upend this for cynical domestic political reasons.

The ICV urges the Australian Government not to stop there, and to move decisively with its commitment to recognise Palestine.

Recognising Palestine, as have 138 other nations, is an important step but will be largely symbolic unless Australia gives full effect to this by holding Israel to account for its actions against Palestine. Just as it has with Russia because of its illegal and brutal invasion of Ukraine.

It is time for Australia to apply consistent policies when dealing with egregious international violations.
