The ICV welcomes the Australian government's decision to vote in favour of the UN resolution recognising Palestine

Islamic Council of Victoria·Media Release·10 May 2024

The ICV acknowledges that Australia has broken away from its closest ally the U.S. which is fully complicit in the genocide happening in Gaza through its extensive military and financial support and the diplomatic cover it provides the pariah state of Israel. However, Australia must ensure that it is clean in this regard and the ICV strongly urges the Australian government to immediately cease all military and intelligence ties with Israel.

The ICV calls upon the Australian government to take all steps at its disposal to pressure Israel to end its cruel attack on Rafah, accept a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza, and to allow unhindered humanitarian aid.

The ICV further calls upon the Australian government to support all international efforts to bring about Palestinian self determination and an end to the occupation, beginning with the immediate recognition of the state of Palestine and calling for the dismantling of the apartheid system that subjugates Palestinians.

Quotes attributable to ICV President Adel Salman: "The UN vote overnight, whilst disappointingly falling short of granting Palestine full Member rights, is a further sign that the 76 years of Israeli occupation and oppression is coming to an end. It is hoped that the international community, which has shamefully abandoned the Palestinians ever since the creation of Israel, will not allow the slaughter of over 35,000 Palestinians and wholesale destruction of Gaza to be in vain."
