The ICV stands with Senator Fatima Payman

Islamic Council of Victoria·Statement·24 June 2024

In crossing the floor to support the motion calling on the Senate to recognise Palestine, Senator Fatima Payman voted according to her conscience and demonstrated commendable courage and moral clarity.

Indeed, it is unconscionable that her Labor Party colleagues did not do the same. It is past time for our government to follow through with its stated commitment to recognise Palestine with no ifs or buts.

It is as clear as the genocide happening before the world's eyes that Israel sees itself as being exempt from international law and has no regard for human life. But it does fear international isolation especially by its allies in the 'global north'. By joining 145 other nations including many in the EU, Australia is saying to Israel that it will no longer accept the status quo. That Palestinians have a right to self-determination and to be free from occupation and apartheid.

And by joining South Africa's genocide case against Israel before the ICJ and declaring that it will arrest Israeli government ministers if the ICC issues arrest warrants, Australia would be further isolating Israel. Expelling Israel's ambassador would have a similar effect.

You are right Senator, the Muslim community and the millions that stand with the Palestinians, are all very proud of you. C'mon Prime Minister Albanese, place Australia on the right side of history and do what you know to be right.
