It is time for Australia to sanction Israel
The murder of heroic Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom should come as no surprise.
On January 26th, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel is on trial for genocide and issued provisional measures that Israel must comply with. On March 25th, 2024, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire. On March 26th, 2024, the ICJ issued additional provisional measures against Israel due to the worsening humanitarian catastrophe. On March 27th, 2024, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian Territories released the findings of a report into the situation in Gaza that found that Israel has met at least three grounds for genocide.
In defiance of these damning rulings and with a sense of complete impunity, Israel continues its murderous campaign in Gaza and the mass starvation of its inhabitants.
All of this is only since October 2023. We cannot overlook Israel's ongoing apartheid against its Palestinian citizens and decades long illegal occupation of the West Bank.
Australia should: cease all military ties with Israel, its supply of arms and weapons parts, and sharing of intelligence; intervene in the South Africa case against Israel at the ICJ as per Ireland and other nations; prevent Australians from joining the IDF and prosecuting those suspected of committing war crimes; issue sanctions against Israeli government and military officials; and push for Israel to be banned from participating in the Paris Olympic Games and all international sporting and cultural events.
