Disability Inclusion & Accessibility

The ICV is committed to fostering an inclusive Muslim community that upholds the dignity, rights and spiritual engagement of people with physical and mental disabilities. We strive to ensure that our programs, services and spaces are inclusive of all members of our community — and encourage our member societies to do the same.

The ICV has adopted a Policy Statement on Accessibility and Disability Inclusion, shared with member societies and the community, encouraging all mosques, schools and community organisations to join us in making our spaces, programs and attitudes more inclusive.

Our accessibility priorities

The ICV’s work is guided by five priorities: promoting inclusive community attitudes; improving the physical accessibility of facilities and events where feasible; supporting accessible events and celebrations, including Auslan interpretation where possible; supporting equity in participation through accessible materials and communications; and listening to lived experience, so that the perspectives of people with disabilities shape the decisions that affect them.

Inclusive programs and events

The ICV supports Disability Awareness Nights at member mosques — where imams and people with lived experience of disability share their perspectives — along with inclusive family Iftars, picnics and social events for people with disabilities and their families, delivered with community partners including MUHSEN Australia.

The ICV has also hosted inclusive, sensory-friendly Eid prayers at the ICV City Mosque — with Auslan interpretation, sensory supports and adjusted sound — and supports member mosques to offer the same. Each year, the ICV releases khutbah topic statements ahead of World Mental Health Day and the International Day of People with Disability, encouraging member societies to speak on disability inclusion and mental health. This work continues to grow through partnerships focused on carers, mental health and masjid accessibility.
