Ramadan & Eid
Iftars, Taraweeh & Eid Prayers
Each Ramadan, the ICV provides community Iftars, Taraweeh prayers and other spiritual and community programs, centred on the ICV City Mosque in the heart of Melbourne.
Nightly community Iftars have become a hallmark of Ramadan at the mosque, bringing families, university students, city workers and long-standing community members together to break their fast side by side — in recent years, up to 850 free meals a night, made possible by dedicated volunteers. No registration is needed — everyone is welcome, and anyone wishing to volunteer can contact the ICV.
Programs during Ramadan
Throughout Ramadan, the mosque typically hosts further programs — Qur’an recitation, Islamic talks and reminders, and other community events.
The annual Kids’ Qur’an Competition invites children up to 16 years of age to showcase their learning and recitation of the Holy Qur’an, competing in age-based categories in a supportive atmosphere that celebrates their connection with the Qur’an. Registration opens ahead of Ramadan, with details announced on the ICV’s website and social channels.
The ICV also hosts an annual Iftar in partnership with Bubup Wilam Aboriginal Child and Family Centre, strengthening the bond between Muslim and First Nations communities.
Beyond metropolitan Melbourne, the ICV’s one regional Ramadan event — the Annual Regional Iftar — is hosted each year in collaboration with regional member societies and their invited guests.
Eid prayers at Flagstaff Gardens
The ICV hosts large open-air Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers at Flagstaff Gardens — among the largest Eid prayers in Victoria — led by the ICV Head Imam and attended by thousands from across Melbourne. The prayers are family-friendly and open to all, with dates, times and details announced ahead of each Eid on the ICV’s website and social channels. On the Day of Arafah, ahead of Eid al-Adha, the ICV also typically hosts an Iftar and community event.
Inclusive, sensory-friendly Eid prayers have also been held at the ICV City Mosque. During Ramadan and Eid, the ICV shares Taraweeh and Eid prayer times and locations from mosques around Victoria on its social channels.
